London mayor and the interweb thingy

I have just read a very interesting article about the London Mayoral elections related web searches. Have a look yourself.

Boris is clearly generating more interest than the other candidates, poor old Brian is really struggling to get online attention. The funny thing is that both Paddick and Livingstone have bought in web expertise from the USA.

Boris on the other hand seems to be benefiting from a natural interest in him and his campaign, supported by his in house web team. For those of you wanting to hook up with Boris over the net you can join him on:

Go on, knock yourselves out.

Generating interest - yes, James but will it get him over the line?

I find it fascinating, as this May 1 is going to be the very first election of any sortin uk where blogging will have any real profile. It's been up and working in the States for some tine ( indeed Obama could be said to exist only because of the blogs) but here we are only beginning. Boris has got the right idea with Facebook etc etc - people might not go to meetings, but they will definitely read a blog - provided it has something interesting or amusing to say. Could blogs even be the salvation of the political process, as they will engage a younger set of voters?

Have a look where the search volumes are coming from: Poplar (most newspapers in Canary Wharf) and Brentford (Sky News).

Most ordinary people are not searching for these guys, it is journalists regurgitating what each other write and picking up the rest from blogs.

As for the lack of searches for Brian Paddick from Poplar and Brentford, this probably reflects media bias rather than public interest.
