Osbourne and Hain, poles apart

Labour are trying to sell the idea that the donations situations with Osbourne and Hain are basically the same. Really? Well lets look at just how "the same" they are?

One takes money from people whose companies he then goes on to endorse, he then fails to register the bulk of the donations anywhere. He admits to the donations one by one as they are exposed by bloggers and the media. Much of the money is still unaccounted for.

The other receives donations which he fully discloses to the electoral commission, unprompted. He then asks the parliamentary authorities if he also needs to record the donations in the register of members' interests, he is told "no" so doesn't. Not exactly the actions of someone trying to hide anything.

Is it just me or do these two cases look like chalk and cheese?

I heard somebody on the radio today suggesting that the parties should provide a reasonable amount of money to the leadership campaigns to ensure that this type of mess (on the Labour side) no longer happens.

No doubt the same people want tax payers funding for political parties and therefore for taxpayers money to pay for Hain or anybody else to campaign for the leadership.

Much as I hate to fund political parties I really really object to funding ego trips for the likes of Hain or any other MP who wants to raise their profile and go on to leave politics for £500,000 deals with US banks.

And just out of interest, why did the Tory donors ask for £500,000 to go specifically to Osbourne's office, rather than central party funds? Did the donors not trust Cameron with this amount of cash.

Something seems a little out of order to poor little Jimmy Public, and just because the electoral commission does not know what they are doing does not mean that questions should not be asked. I would be grateful if somebody could explain why the money needed to go specifically to Osbourne's office and if this type of donation is a common occurrence.

Labour are clutching at straws, so it doesn't surprise me that this has come about.

Cameron handled it very well on Marr's show - compare and contrast fawning of Marr when GB was on

Chalk and Cheese, you're not wrong James.
Osbourne is taking on two chancellors: Coral Mompass and his dæmon Badger. These two have a vast amount of govt machinery and Lab Party support. Its only right that Osbourne's office is well funded.
This all reminds me I haven't paid my Conservative party subscription yet. The Conservatives gave me a nice coffee mug the other day so it seems only fair I chip in.
