I do not believe for one moment that people who write articles like that are stupid or even misinformed. I'm sure they know perfectly well what the true situation is and are fearful that there is even more discreditable material which will be discovered unless they frighten off investigators.
The calculation still seems to be that if you accuse someone of being a racist, whether they are or not, doing so undermines any evidence that they produce of malpractice. Unfortunately that trick does sometimes work.
I doubt Gilligan will let go, as long as he can satisfy the Standard's lawyers that his evidence would stand up in court. So I think we shall be reading of more dodgy deals and hearing more screams of anger at their discovery.
If Livingstone loses and a serious internal investigation gets underway the disclosures and the screams will multiply. Time for Boris to really get his campaign into gear. We need a liberator, all of us. Four more years of Livingstone are not a happy prospect.
The cries of 'racist' every time somebody says something you disagree with not only lowers politics to facile name calling, but undermine the real problems with racist attitudes in our society which have been so ably demonstrated by both Livingstone (to businessmen of Iraqi (not Iranian) origin and to a Jewish journalist, and by Boris Johnson on a similar number of occasions.
Neither are fit to accuse others of racism until they clean up their acts.
If James is happy to clear Boris of racism, I think I'd be inclined to back his judgement. I'm slightly surprised you aren't, but there we go.
On the other hand the Livingstone clique have a lot of form in that direction and they do seem to put no end of effort into hating political opponents and telling lies about them.

Jimmy,
