Des Browne, do I need to say more?
Probably not, but I will.
Liam Fox used the phrase "Complete ministerial incompetence" to describe the toing and frowing over the sales of the detainees stories. Spot on.
Regular readers will know that Des Browne is not my favourite minister, yet I am looking for an opportunity to say something good about him, one thing, one act of professionalism on his part would do, anything to show that I am not totally biased.
He hasn't given me anything yet!

He certainly is not worth the £150K per year plus pension. I know of corporals on less than 20k per year who make harder decisions, and then stick to them!
This is one mess-up that I actually believe the tories would NOT have made!
If you are looking for something good to say, you could say that it is to the credit of our government that the sailors were returned unharmed faster than the BBC journalist. This is probably the most important aspect, that they are all home and safe.
You could also say that he was right not to pass the buck, either to Navy officials or to Downing Street. Or you could say that his immenient resignation will be the best thing to happen to our armed forces (Could you use the headline "One Browne, one to go" later this week)?
You could also say that it was inevitable for somebody to sell their story, if not the sailors, then their families. Better that the interviews come from serving officers, who can be held accountable for what they say, than for their husbands/wives to give interviews and not be held accountable. Given this situation you might say that this unique situation the acutal result in terms of the interviews and payment has not done any real damage and probably minimised it.
It may even be that Des Browne has taken the flack, rather than leaving the captured soldiers and their families to take all the nonsense in the media and blogs. He has affectively diverted all the media critisism. This is what somebody in his position should do, but I suspect I am being far too generous to him, this is simply not what politicians do.
