It is becoming increasingly clear that the "market" for A level students is flexing its muscle. Employers and universities are imposing extra requirements on students because the current A level system is not vigorous enough. While the government might not be taking the quality of education and examinations seriously employers and universities are.The irony is that the children of the least wealthy, least connected or the least confident will lose out. A rigorous education system means that the gifted and industrious stand out, whatever their background, currently they are lost in the crowd.
Social mobility is being limited because the government and many within the educational establishment cannot let go of their "all must have prizes" mindset.
