Charles Kennedy's hidden alcoholism

I am not going to make snide remarks or cheap jokes about Kennedy and his drinking, I have seen alcoholism up close and personal and it is too serious a problem to be joked about.

But …..

How on earth did the Lib Dems think that their party and possibly the country could be run by an alcoholic? This whole episode reflects badly on the senior people within the party, a lack of honesty, a lack of mutual respect, a lack of judgement and a lack of courage seems to pervade this whole episode.

Thank goodness judgemental idiots like you weren't around when we were last in a world war. Churchill admitted he relied on alcohol.

Rob,

You may think me harsh, I make no apology.

I have seen the effect that an alcohol addiction can have on someone and it is debilitating. Either your party take seriously its attempts at being seen as an alternative government or it does not.

Having a leader who at times was incapacitated through drink and having a leadership team who were deceiving your party, parliament and the country indicates the latter.

Methinks that Rob F's hostile and humourless rudeness in his comment tells you a lot about him!

For all Kennedy's genuine talents, I would hardly compare him to Churchill, no matter how much or little he drank...

With all due respect to you and your party, wasn't it Winston Churchill, among other things Prime Minister during one of the most difficult times of the 20th century and the Second World War, who had a 'close relationship' with alcohol as well? And he even started as a Liberal... I don't want to make any attempt to compare Kennedy to Churchill), but please spare a minute in reflecting on your own party's history and those people who led party and country in much more difficult times than they are today.

Sniping at other parties and other people is part of the business being in politics, but at least some people in politics have the virtue of not taking every opportunity on offer to get personal. And this would have been a story which could have been missed for commenting...

Best regards

His Swen,

I think you and Rob have missed the point of the post.

I am not sniping at CK, I am criticising the Lib Dems at Westminster who have shown a great deal of contempt and disrespect for people like you who campaign at a local level.

First they hid his alcoholism and then, when it suited them, crucified him for it.

CK had a problem, one which I feel detrimentally affected his ability to lead a party and be a contender for PM. You and Rob seem to think that he could face his demons and still be a credible challenger. If I am wrong and you are both right why did you get rid of him?

Lib Dems complaining about personal comments - how ironic, and how sad they don't get the irony of it

Oh come ON!They knew they were never going to run the country, and so did we.

I think they got into a devil's pact. Revealing it was going to make things even worse, and as he got into the booze worse, the downside of revealing it got worse too. They were trapped. Charlie needed to be caught in public for them to be released orgasmically from the devil's pact they had signed up to.

The chance never came.

Surely not even the most deluded LibDum can possibly believe that they will ever run the country? Being one of their MP's is just another form of Care In The Community at taxpayers expense.

The day they produce a PM I guarantee that his arrival at No10 will be accompanied by a fanfare of pigs flying out of my backside.
