I was at the Blackheath/Lewisham/Lee Green forum on Monday. We were given an insight into redevelopment plans for the area immediately in front of Lewisham Station. At the moment it is a very busy and ugly roundabout that cuts Lewisham off from the station.
Under the new plans it could become a pleasant, pedestrian focussed area with a park, river and shopping area. A huge improvement.
However…….
The plans also include four or five tower blocks of up to twenty stories. These will be higher than the Citibank building that currently dominates the skyline of northern Lewisham.
The population density of this area will be increased dramatically and the knock on effects could be felt for decades to come.
I will support this development, but only if the residential element is kept in proportion to the infrastructure of the area.

Do you mean the transport infrastructure, which is surely some of the best in south London, on the wider schools / hospitals infrastructure?
Adam,
I am worried about both. The planners stated that their brief was to accommodate the existing traffic levels, they do not seem to have accounted for the extra thousand or so cars that the new residents will bring with them. This will undoubtedly increase the pressure on the transport infrastructure.
In addition to this there will be increased demand for health, waste, water and refuse management immediately after the project is completed and childcare, schools and recreational facilities a few year down the line.
There seems to have been little on no thought on these issues.
I am not opposed to development and I welcome the increased investment in Lewisham but I am worried that we will over egg this project and build problems for ourselves in a few years time.
