Having done a bit of running and having been in the TA for years I find it quite easy jumping back and forth between miles and kilometres. For easy reference 1 mile is four laps of a 400m track, 1,600 meters, a 5k race is about three miles and clearly a 10k is about six. 80kph is 50mph and 100km is just over 60 miles (which is why acceleration figures are given as 0-60mph over here, it equates to 0-100kph everywhere else).

Despite all of the above and despite the fact that we officially went metric decades ago I still don’t like the idea of ditching miles.

Umfortunatly, when Ireland converted, they not only changed the units, but cut down on the speed limits, trapping more motorists with fines. Thier 60mph limits went to 80kph! Go figure!
Apparently this “inflation” happened a lot on the continent when they switched to the Euro. I don’t want to over egg an argument but it does seem like yet another reason not to switch
Here's an idea, why don't we first standardise on one language spoken in Britain, I don't know, how about ENGLISH? Then, with the money saved not having to reprint documents in Hindi, Urdu etc etc we could afford to convert to Kilometers for free!
